First week of class

I spent last weekend at beautiful Hampton Beach, New Hampshire where I went to visit my new nephew. Due to family work conflicts, I was able to spend Saturday in Jumping Jack's Java coffee shop, sitting in front of the bay window that overlooked the ocean, reading "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms" in front of the roaring fireplace. What a great day!!! It's not often that I get the opportunity to just sit and read - uninterrupted by at least one of my three children! I managed to get through the first three chapters (on Weblogs) before the beach started calling for me to take a walk!

I got back home on Sunday and jumped right into my classes! I'm excited to be finishing up this week's assignments. It's a little difficult to read discussions and post a thought-provoking comment with Lego Indiana Jones blaring on the computer behind me! My son has Kindergarten classes in the morning so if I don't get my assignments completed by 11:30 in the morning, I'm in trouble! I feel guilty working on my classes when he is home. If I don't try to play with him, he'll migrate towards either the television, computer, or Nintendo Advance (which he has now zoned-in on).

I'm anxious to start working on my Webquest!! I'm collaborating with a couple teachers from my son's elementary school and we're meeting tomorrow to start working through the details. The Webquest is going to be on water purification. At first I thought about incorporating the Webquest into a website about community service. But after more thought, I think I'll instead create a website on disaster preparedness. I just ran across an article that I copied out of the August 2007 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine that will prove to be a great resource! And with the current disaster in Haiti, the website could prove to be pretty informative and useful!

  1. Jean,
Great job setting up your blog! And I am very impressed that you have already set up a meeting to begin work on your WebQuest. Not to mention that you already have a topic for your Website. Not bad for the first week of class!

Wasn't it cold at Hampton Beach at this time of year? I have only been there during the summer an even then it was quite chilly. Regardless of the temperature, that is one of my favorite parts of the country. We vacation at a lake house near Keene every summer and try to make it to the coast at least every couple of years.

  2. Hi Denise,

Hampton Beach was actually in the mild 40's when I was there. It was really nice to walk on the beach. There were a lot of people doing the same as me. I'm was born and raised in Northern Maine, so temperatures in the 40's feel like Spring!! lol!

My brother had to work the Saturday I was there so I was able to get a little ahead on my school reading. Plus, I had spoken to my son's teacher a week earlier and she told me all about her water purification project that she and a few other teachers were working on, so I offered to help her out. We met yesterday and hopefully I'll be able to get the majority of it done this weekend (fingers crossed).

  3. Hi Jean,

I am also a mother of three (Austin 5, Ella 4, and Luke 1) and I want to know your secret on how you were able to snag some quiet reading time in front of a roaring fire! I'm both jealous and impressed. My oldest is in Kindergarten in the mornings too but I have two others home then so I try to get the majority of my work done after bedtime. I am looking forward to Spring when some fresh air will tire them out so I can get a longer nap out of Luke. Isn't it funny what we orchestrate so we can get some time to think?

  4. LOL, Mary! I had to fly 800 miles away to get some alone time in front of the fire! And I've figured out that I do my best thinking when I'm in the shower.....probably because that is the only time I'm ever alone!
